News from our five shops

This coming Saturday is National Bookshop Day, and we’d love you to come visit one of our five shops to help us celebrate.

Here’s a little bit of recent news from each of our shops – including which books our staff are loving, and what forthcoming events you should get excited about.

Carlton

Our Carlton shop recently hosted a celebration for the new Harry Potter story and it was such a fun morning. You can find some photos from the day here. Other events to look out for later this month at our Carlton shop include an evening with comedian Dave O'Neil, and the launch of the first ever book publication from literary journal The Lifted Brow. Our head book buyer Alison Huber works out of our Carlton shop, and you can find out what books she’s excited for this month here.

Hawthorn

Upcoming big name events at our Hawthorn shop include an afternoon with Tim Winton (which booked out within hours of being advertised!) – and look out for upcoming events with Garth Nix, Chris Cleave and Hannah Kent. Details for all our September events will be available on our online event calendar next week so stay tuned. You’ll also find plenty of great recommendations for books from our Hawthorn staff this month: bookseller Annie Condon recommends a debut novel ‘for fans of Favel Parrett and Hannah Kent’; children’s specialist Kim Grushchow recommends ’a handsome book that occupies a space between picture book and novel’ for ages 6-9; and children’s buyer Alexa Dretzke recommends a ‘poignant and beautiful’ picture book about loss.

St Kilda

Shop manager Amy Vuleta is a massive fan of Megan Abbott, and she absolutely loved the American author’s new novel. You can read her rave review here. As well as book lovers, you’ll find plenty of music lovers at our St Kilda shop which hosts a wide range of CDs and vinyl. In August they’re hosting a bookshop gig by young Australian musician Jake Fehily as part of St Kilda Festival’s Live N Local program, and don’t miss out on their special September event with Robert Forster (of The Go-Betweens fame). Space is strictly limited.

Malvern

Young customers at our Malvern shop are very excited about the new Treehouse adventure from Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton – we even have photographic evidence to this fact! And while the children are busy with their noses in a book, you might like to seek out this some reading material of your own. Malvern bookseller Gabrielle Williams recommends Susan Faludi’s new memoir, saying: 'This book is a fascinating read, a slice of brilliance on the nonfiction bookshelves.’ Read her full review here.

State Library

Readings at the State Library Victoria is a wonderful place to find bookish ideas for visitors to Melbourne, as not only do they stock a wide range of gorgeous gift books but they also carry titles that draw from the history and archives of the State Library Victoria itself, as well as the Library’s exhibitions. In late August and early September our Shop manager Tom Hoskins is going to find himself very busy as he’ll also be managing our Festival Bookshop for this year’s Melbourne Writers Festival. We hope you’ll come by for a visit.

Don’t forget that we’re offering 15% off our special Readings branded merchandise on the day – find out more here.
