Work experience — Readings Books

Apply for work experience at Readings!

Applications are now open for our 2026 work experience program for secondary school students aged 15 and over.

As a community-focused independent bookshop, Readings is committed to sharing our passion and knowledge for books, music, and culture. Through this program, we aim to provide students with meaningful insight into the operations of an independent retailer and encourage the development of interests in literature, music, and the arts.

Program details

We are offering a limited number of one-week placements during May and June 2026 at the following locations:

  1. Carlton – 309 Lygon Street, Carlton
  2. Chadstone – Chadstone Shopping Centre
  3. Doncaster – Westfield Doncaster
  4. Emporium – 287 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
  5. Hawthorn – 687 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn

What to expect

During your week at Readings, you will gain hands-on experience across multiple areas of the business. This includes customer service, inventory management systems, online order fulfillment, researching titles, supporting the children's book section, and understanding the day-to-day operations of independent retail.

You'll work alongside team members who are genuinely passionate about books, providing you with a realistic understanding of what it means to work in this industry.
