Readings Doncaster Shop Manager
We're looking for someone to run our beautiful Doncaster shop. This means taking responsibility for the whole operation – the team, the numbers, the community connections, and the day-to-day work that makes a bookshop function well.
What the role involves
You'll be managing sales and profit performance, building and developing your team, looking after budgets and wage costs, and creating the kind of shop experience that keeps people coming back. You'll work with the local community, handle the operational side of things (rosters, stock, merchandising, events), and make sure your shop reflects what Readings stands for.
This isn't a role where you manage from a distance. You'll be on the shop floor, serving customers, solving problems as they come up, and working alongside your team. You'll need to balance commercial objectives with genuine customer service and team care.
What we're looking for
You'll need bookselling experience – an understanding of books, readers, and how independent bookselling works. You'll also need 2-3 years of retail management experience with a track record of meeting financial targets and managing budgets.
Strong people leadership matters. We need someone who can bring teams together, create a sense of shared purpose, and help people feel part of the journey. You'll need to be engaging, collaborative, and transparent in how you lead. You'll coach and develop your team, manage performance when needed, give clear feedback, and build a culture where people do good work and enjoy their work.
You'll need to be comfortable with P&L, understand what drives profitability, and use data to inform your decisions. You should be highly organised and pragmatic – able to juggle competing priorities and stay calm when things get busy. You should enjoy building local relationships and being part of the community your shop serves.
Shopping centre retail experience is an advantage but not essential.
Most importantly, you need to genuinely care about what Readings represents in Australia's literary landscape.
What we offer
A competitive salary package, professional development opportunities, staff discounts and access to advance reading copies, and a workplace culture that values what you bring to the work.
