Last week’s bestsellers list features two debut Australian novels that look to the past. In Bridget Crack, Rachel Leary transports readers to Van Diemen’s Land of 1826, and in The Last Man in Europe, Dennis Glover reimagines George Orwell’s life as he wrote beloved classic Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Other bestselling books include Jamila Rizvi’s frank, feminist career manifesto (Not Just Lucky), a heart-stopping new thriller from Daniel Silva (House of Spies), Mark Manson’s popular and direct self-help book (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck) and Roxanne Gay’s deeply personal memoir (Hunger).

Of the latter, our reviewer writes: ‘ Hunger is an extraordinarily brave and powerfully honest book… A woman whose work should be read, shared and celebrated.’ Read the full review here.

Arundhati Roy’s much-anticipated second work of fiction, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, also appears on this list. This novel was recently longlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize – view the full longlist here.
