With NAIDOC Week 2019 wrapping up yesterday, it’s wonderful to see some beautiful works by Indigenous authors in last week’s list of bestselling kids and YA books. In the top spot once again is Bruce Pascoe’s wonderful young readers’ edition of his bestselling book for adults (Dark Emu), Young Dark Emu. Due to demand, we are currently low in stock for Young Dark Emu, but rest assured, more stock is coming!

It’s a joy to see Wilam: A Birrarung Story by Aunty Joy Murphy, Andrew Kelly and Lisa Kennedy back in the top 10. This is a beautiful depiction of one day in the life of a beautiful, flourishing river – Birrarung, which many of us know as the Yarra River. This is the Indigenous and geographical story of a river close to many of our hearts, depicted by an award-winning picture book duo.

For more beautiful picture books, check out Maxine Beneba Clarke’s new one, Fashionista. It’s a beautiful way for young readers to explore embracing their individuality, with illustrations made from hand-cut collage. We were lucky enough to host Maxine Beneba Clarke at Readings Doncaster and Readings Kids for some very special collage-making events last week, and we loved seeing all the bright and vibrant collages that the kids made.
