What we're reading over summer

Our staff share the books they’re planning to read over summer.

My extensive summer reading list is as follows: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toew, Dept of Speculation by Jenny Offill, The Most of Nora Ephron by Nora Ephron, Nobody Is Ever Missing by Catherine Lacey, H is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald, Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit, Young Hearts Crying by Richard Yates, Tracks by Robyn Davidson and Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward.
– Nina Kenwood, Digital Marketing Manager

Two of my favourite female writers had books out this year: Sonya Hartnett with Golden Boys and Ali Smith with How To Be Both. I’ve saved them up because their prose excites me so much that I want the clear headspace a couple of weeks off work provides. My 2015 young adult reading got off to a fantastic start with A Small Madness by Dianne Touchell, out in February. Next on my list is The Flywheel by Erin Gough, which several of my trusted sources have raved about.
– Emily Gale, Online Children’s Specialist

Like most of you, my summer reading stack is a touch excessive. So, in order to trick myself into believing the task is surmountable, I’ve put them in reading order. I’m starting with two fun books: The Magicians by Lev Grossman (described as a kind of ‘Harry Potter for adults’) and The Vacationers by Emma Straub (two weeks holiday with America’s most dysfunctional family). Next on the list is Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower which is for my book club, and so on. Other books in my increasingly ambitious list include two early copies of upcoming titles: On Immunity: an Inoculation by Eula Biss and The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro.
– Bronte Coates, Digital Content Coordinator

I’ve become fascinated by the contemporary personal essay, which is evident by my summer reading plan. On my list are Nora Ephron’s The Most of Nora Ephron, Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist, Jonathan Franzen’s How to Be Alone and Sloane Crosley’s I Was Told There’d Be Cake, as well as some essay collections by Cynthia Ozick and David Foster Wallace.
– Sophie Lloyd, Bookseller

I have too many books to read over summer. Today I’m most excited about reading All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews, Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, an early copy of Bad Behaviour by Rebecca Starford and … I don’t think I’ll reveal anymore as there seems to be a strange theme emerging here!
– Emily Harms, Head of Marketing and Communications
