Graveyard Shift

M.L. Rio

A lot of the things that I and countless other readers loved about M.L. Rio’s iconic If We Were Villains are also present in this new novella – we’re back on a university campus and following a cast of characters that are tight-knit almost in spite of themselves – but Graveyard Shift still feels completely unique.

This is a great read for Halloween, or just for fans of Dark Academia. There are thriller elements, it's fast paced with an atmospheric sense of dread, and the plot revolves around a sinister strain of mushrooms and a new grave in a historic graveyard … I highly recommend!

Ghosted

Amy Hutton

Every October I try to read at least one Halloween-esque book. This year, I chose Ghosted by Amy Hutton. It’s a delightfully spooky romcom about Holly, a professional ghost-whisper who can actually see ghosts!

It’s been two years since Holly ghosted Callum Jefferies, a successful paranormal podcast host (who can’t actually see ghosts). They were SO CLOSE to being a couple but something … went wrong. Now Callum needs Holly to help with a ghost investigation that turns into a whole lot more than either of them bargained for.

I listened to Ghosted via Libro.fm and it was such a fun, light listen! The narrator has a great voice (this is very important to me!) and I was absolutely hooked from the start. I highly recommend grabbing the physical copy as the sprayed edges are adorable, but the audiobook is great too!

The Naturals

Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Cassie isn't a regular teenager. She's a Natural with the ability to read people. She can tell you exactly who a person is and what they're thinking. When the FBI approaches her to join a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, Cassie jumps at the chance to prove herself and her abilities. But soon, it becomes clear that not everyone in the Naturals program is what they seem, and when a new killer strikes and danger lurks closer to Cassie than ever before, she'll have to work with the rest of the team to solve the mystery and stay alive.

Perfect for fans of Criminal Minds, The Naturals will leave you staying up late to get to the end. A fantastic page turner with gripping twists, it will make you want to start the next book in the series immediately!

Holly

Stephen King

This story has a mix of crime and horror with a political edge, which is new for King's work – I really enjoyed this book! This isn't a gritty thriller but if you want a fun page-turner, I would recommend it. I have such a soft spot for Stephen King novels!

Now, Conjurers

Freddie Kölsch

Supernatural horror, a gruesome murder mystery, a queer covern of witches and (according to Goodreads) the 'historical' setting of 1999. As well as being genuinely creepy, this book was fun and heartfelt.

I'll be thinking about these characters for a long time. And, of course, those long, red hands …
