A sure-fire way to get kids to love reading is humour, and that’s reflected in our bestsellers from last week, where the top four titles are all funny-bone ticklers. Leading the way is Lazy Daisy, a rhyming picture book about Jasper, a man who’s so desperate to walk his ‘dog’ in the park that he adopts Daisy, a koala who’s more interested in climbing gumtrees and dozing. There are also new books by David Walliams (Fing) and Anh Do (Ninja Switch (Ninja Kid, Book 3)) and the hilarious Real Pigeons Fight Crime.

The problem-solving Pigeons are also one of three books shortlisted for this year’s Readings Children’s Book Prize that has made our top 10, alongside quirky middle-grade mystery The Orchard Underground and upper-primary fantasy epic Elementals: Ice Wolves.

Our top 10 also features two Angie Thomas YA novels, and two stunning picture books: All the Ways to be Smart and Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, a beautiful new release that retells some of the central ideas from Darwin’s seminal text for a young audience. Featuring sumptuous illustrations by Sabina Radeva, who has drawn inspiration from Darwin’s travels, it’ll be a hit with any child who has a love for animals or an adventurous spirit.
