The Adventures of Marshall Mission: Christmas Takes a Holiday Director’s Script: A Pageant Wagon Production

Kathryn Ross

Turn back the clock with this nostalgic slice of old-time radio theatre drama! Sean: A Christmas cliffhanger serial adventure! Jack: With commercial advertisements! Hope: And music! Wiley: Don’t forget the sound effects! Cassidy: And maybe even a weather report! Announcer: Places everyone! WPWP Radio Theatre is on-the-air! And with that line, a cast of nine actors transport the imaginations of church, school, or community theatre audiences to a 1940’s radio station for a special broadcast of The Adventures of Marshall Mission: Christmas Takes a Holiday. Story Synopsis: Miss Frieda is swept up in the Hustle and Bustle of the Christmas season, carried away into the chaotic clutches of the vile Ebenezer Frenzy! Now, she’s locked up in Turmoil Tower, fed by Fear and Anxiety on the Treadmill of Trials. Only her neighbor, Marshall Mission, Janitor Man, and his faithful assistant Brillio Boy, have the arsenal of soaps and dust-busters necessary to sponge away her confused state of mind and heart. But, Filth and Foul are afoot armed with clutter and calamity. How will Marshall Mission overpower the enemy and set her clean free to share and celebrate the true Reason for the Christmas Season? This entertaining and inspiring one-act comedy, running about 45 minutes, keeps the laughs coming with a three episode Marshall Mission cliffhanger story sponsored by hilarious commercial products like Heavenly House Coffee and the Manna Mix Baking Company. Clever puns, jingles, campy comedy, and ensemble acting makes this a great drama choice for youth groups and students grades five and up. Simple sets, costumes, and props make production achievable for limited budgets, allowing the director more time to invest in grooming student performances. We leave the theatre with our hearts lifted and minds engaged, pondering God’s truths. Parents and children further their take-away from the drama with constructive conversation about important aspects of their faith and the choices they make–family literacy. Script for the director includes production notes and study guides.
