Bohuslav Martinu was a Czechoslovakian composer who is one of the best-kept secrets by those in the know. Fiery, yet often lyrical at the height of passion, this new recording by brothers Paul and Huw Watkins is a stunning representation of Martinu’s cello repertoire. Strong technique from both the brothers makes each work and movement a delightful experience. Featuring both the cello sonatas and the two variations - one on a Rossini theme and one on a Slovak theme - it’s an interesting and entirely accessible example of modern repertoire.
