Low Country Blues

Allman Greg

Gregg Allman’s blues-wolf growl and soul-church charge on the Hammond B-3 organ are so identified with — and perfect for — the electric improvising brawn of the Allman Brothers Band that it is a shock to hear Allman’s voice and instrumental stamp in any other setting. But Low Country Blues is a tailor-made stretch, to an earthy turmoil that feels like homecoming: a trip with the spirits that shaped his band’s sound and mission — B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Skip James, Otis Rush — with all of the healing that implies. Rolling Stone

Review

Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the man who specialises in getting former rock stars like Robert Plant to reclaim their roots mojo, this album is a very solid return to form for one of the great white blues singers. Allman, along with brother Duane, helped create the blueprint for southern blues-rock in the early 70s.

Don’t expect the amped-up guitar sound of the Allman Brothers Band, though. This is a full return to the soul and blues that got him into music in the first place. The album features the usual T-Bone rhythm section in tow, plus the piano playing of Dr John and great guitar support from Doyle Bramhall II on a bunch of tunes from the likes of Muddy Waters, BB King, Skip James and Sleepy John Estes.
