Winners of the Inky Awards 2016

The Centre for Youth Literature has announced the winners of the 2016 Inky Awards!

The Inky Awards recognise high-quality young adult literature, with the shortlist selected by young adults, and the winners voted for online by teens. There are two awards: the Gold Inky Award for an Australian book, and the Silver Inky Award for an international book.

Gold Inky Award Winner

The Gold Inky Award winner is the groundbreaking sci-fi epic, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (Allen and Unwin).

A graphic designer and font lover’s dream, Illuminae is a compelling combination of action, romance and AI intrigue. Children’s and YA specialist Isobel Moore describes it as, ‘a truly original and inspiring read that shows great empathy to its characters’.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel, Gemina, out later this month.

Congratulations Amie and Jay!

Silver Inky Award Winner

The Silver Inky Award Winner is I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, the alternating story of the fractured relationship between two fraternal twins, Jude and Noah.

Intense and emotional, I’ll Give You the Sun touches on themes of art and identity, and reveals its secrets slowly. Digital marketing manager Lian Hingee describes it as, 'a beautiful story about love and forgiveness, and the bond between siblings’.

It’s interesting to note that this novel has also won the librarian-voted Michael L. Printz award, meaning that this story has been equally loved by adult and teen readers.

Congratulations Jandy!
