What we're reading: Gott, McGeachin & Brown

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.

Tye Cattanach is reading Frankie and the Fossil by Jess McGeachin

The newest picture book offering from one of my favourite author/illustrators is everything we have come to expect from his work. Sweet, thoughtful stories featuring curious, intelligent characters. Beautifully detailed illustrations in soft, muted palettes. McGeachin has consistently delivered delightful read aloud stories that can be shared over and over again, the kind of stories that are perfect for continued discussion with little ones curious about all things. Who knew dinosaurs loved cheese sandwiches!

Highly recommended for ages 3+ and grown ups who love the museum as much as I do.

Xiao-Xiao Kingham is reading Fred Gets Dressed by Peter Brown

Fred Gets Dressed by Peter Brown is undoubtedly my favourite picture book of 2021 thus far and I have made it my mission in life to bring it the attention and adoration it deserves, single-handedly if need be. The premise is delightfully simple, Fred is a boy who just loves to be naked. While gleefully romping around the house one day he stumbles upon his parents’ wardrobe and decides to try to get dressed. When Fred is discovered wearing his mother’s clothes, jewellery and makeup the whole family decides to join in on the dress-up fun.

There is so much I love about this picture book; the art-style, the strategically angled shots of Fred, his parents who appear completely unconcerned with the naked child galavanting through their house. Indeed, the effortless nonchalance of the book adds a unique charm and humour throughout that can be relished by parents and children alike. The message of the story ultimately becomes whatever readers take away from it, whether it be about the harmless fun of family dress-up or the importance of self-expression and acceptance.

Mark Rubbo is reading The Orchard Murders by Robert Gott

I’ve been reading our crime book of the month, The Orchard Murders by Robert Gott.

I think Gott must be a bit mad, eccentric at least, because he thinks up some pretty gruesome and crazy crimes, perpetrated and uncovered by an odd assortment of characters. Perhaps you shouldn’t read this book otherwise you might become a little strange. I think I have … or maybe it’s the lockdown. But seriously, Gott is great, a diamond ready to be discovered.
