What we're reading: Christopher & Tan

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.

Tracy Hwang is reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

It’s been a while since I picked up a fantasy novel and I’m really enjoying dipping my toes back in with Sue Lynn Tan’s Daughter of the Moon Goddess.

I’ve only read a few chapters so far but the world-building descriptions feel so true to Chinese mythology and culture and it gives me such a thrill to see them on the page. Inspired by the mid-Autumn legend of Chang’e (the Moon Goddess) and Houyi, Tan’s debut tells the story of the daughter of these mythological figures, Xingyin. I’m having so much fun with it so far and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Aurelia Orr is reading Release by Lucy Christopher

I read Lucy Christopher’s book Stolen at the beginning of high school and absolutely fell in love with the characters, the writing and the Australian landscape where the story takes place. Now, seven years later, I get to read what happened to these beloved characters in the newly released sequel, Release, and my inner child is screaming to finally be back.

Christopher has an unblemished talent for exploring the layers of trauma and grief for one’s self, and the complexities of human relationships. The story explores how we’re drawn to the toxic traits of another, the conflicting feelings we have to learning that even monsters have a good or relatable side, and the decisions we have to make for ourselves surrounding these ideas; can we live with these people forever or are we able to release them?

This is a gripping, addictive story of confronting your past, healing the scars of trauma, and ultimately, redemption.
