What we're reading: Andrew, Knight & Fan

Each week our wonderful staff share the books and music that they've been enjoying.

Yasmin Baker is reading Your Blood, My Bones by Kelly Andrew

I recently read Your Blood, My Bones by Kelly Andrew in one sitting – I could not put it down! It was spooky and the plot was intense, but for me it was the characters that kept me reading; I fell in love with all three, and was so curious on what was going to happen next. I felt myself getting emotionally attached to all of them and by the end of the book I was having a mid-life crisis over what I had just read. I cannot recommend it enough. Perfect for fans of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater!

Noah Ellis is reading Convoys by Roger Knight

In the classic novels of the Napoleonic Wars at sea, the dull work of convoy escort duty serves only to give Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower the chance to lie low and let the latest scandal blow over. Roger Knight's Convoys sets the record straight, with a speedy tour through the dysfunctional and occasionally deadly work the British Royal Navy performed in protecting Britain's merchant navy from the depredations of the French, the weather and, quite often, itself. Yet, for all the nautical drama, the regular appearance of Lloyd's Bank and insurance underwriters makes this history feel at times thoroughly modern.

Kim Gruschow is reading Night Lunch by Eric Fan (illustrated by Dena Seiferling)

Night Lunch by Eric Fan is a recent favourite. Night lunch is certainly a beautiful concept, and for an owl it makes complete sense. In this book an owl runs a late night lunch cart, serving up delicious and comforting delights to fellow nocturnal animals. The illustrations by Dena Seiferling are exquisite work, dark yet very warm and the page featuring puddings for little possums brought a tear to my eye. There's a hint of danger, as darkness so often entails, but the story glows with camaraderie and delight.
