The Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals winners 2017

The winners of the 2017 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals have been announced, and we’re thrilled to see Melbourne author Zana Fraillon listed among the recipients!

The Carnegie Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book written in English for children and young people. The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people. As of 2017, all shortlisted titles are also now eligible for an extra commendation, the Amnesty CILIP Honour, which celebrates books that best illuminate, uphold or celebrate human rights.


The CILIP Carnegie Medal has been awarded to Ruta Sepetys for Salt to the Sea.

Award-winning novelist Ruta Sepetys is known for her heartbreaking depictions of historical events. Salt to the Sea follows four young people during World War II as they journey towards the fated ship, the Wilhelm Gustloff.

The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal has been awarded to Lane Smith for There is a Tribe of Kids.

Lane Smith is a Readings favourite for his great sense of humour, stylish illustrations and insight into children’s quirks. There is a Tribe of Kids takes a wild young child on a romp through a range of environments to meet groups of animals, in a quest for belonging.


The Amnesty CILIP Honour for the Carnegie Medal shortlist has been awarded to Zana Fraillon for The Bone Sparrow.

We’re thrilled that Melbourne author Zana Fraillon has won this award for her empathetic and uncompromising story of a young Rohingyar boy Subhi, who was born in a detention centre. The Bone Sparrow is also one of our six shortlisted books for the inaugural Readings Young Adult Prize.

The Amnesty CILIP Honour for the Kate Greenaway Medal shortlist has been awarded to Francesca Sanna for The Journey.

The Journey is a colourful, sensitive and densely illustrated story about a family who have to leave their troubled home country and seek refuge in a new place.
