Six books to read before watching the adaptation

There are so many incredible books being adapted for the big and little screen in 2022. But we all know, the book is better. Here are 6 books to read before watching the adaptation.

Conversations with friends

Sally Rooney, author of Normal People (already an adaptation on Stan) is an incredible storyteller and Conversations with Friends is proof of that.

Frances is a cool-headed and darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. At a local poetry performance one night, Frances and her best friend Bobbi catch the eye of Melissa, a well-known photographer, and as the girls are gradually drawn into Melissa’s world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman’s sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband, Nick.

Where The Crawdads Sing

Where The Crawdads Sing has topped The New York Times bestsellers list for 32 non-consecutive weeks. No wonder they’re adapting it for film. Plus, how gorgeous is that cover?

For years, rumours of the Marsh Girl have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl.

But Kya is not what they say. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Jenny Han is already well known for the To All The Boys I loved Before series after the adaptation hit Netflix. But get ready for another addictive love triangle story with The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Every year Isabel spends a perfect summer at her favourite place in the world - the Fisher family’s beach house. It has everything a girl could want - a swimming pool, a private stretch of sandy beach … and two boys. Unavailable, aloof Conrad and friendly, relaxed Jeremiah. This year, the boys seem to really notice Isabel for the first time. It’s going to be an amazing summer - and one she’ll never forget …

Daisy Jones and The Six

Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favourite authors and so I am so excited for my favourite book of hers, Daisy Jones and The Six, to be adapted into a TV show.

They were the new icons of rock and roll, fated to burn bright and not fade away. But on 12 July 1979, it all came crashing down.

There was Daisy, rock and roll force of nature, brilliant songwriter and unapologetic drug addict. There was Camila, the frontman’s wife, too strong-willed to let the band implode - and all too aware of the electric connection between her husband and Daisy. There was Karen, ice-cool keyboardist, a ferociously independent woman in a world that wasn’t ready for her. And there were the men surrounding them. It’s never just about the music…

The Sky is Everywhere

A beautiful story of loss, The Sky is Everywhere is a must read before watching the film. Jandy Nelson’s prose has poetic beauty.

Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to centre stage of her own life - and suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two boys. One boy takes Lennie out of her sorrow; the other comforts her in it. But the two can’t collide without Lennie’s world exploding… Join Lennie on this heartbreaking and hilarious journey of profound sorrow and mad love.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

That’s right, they’ve created another adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife! This time it’s starring the incredible Rose Leslie who you may recognised from Game of Thrones. You may want to rush into watching the show straight away, but do make sure you read the book first to really appreciate the story!

This is the extraordinary love story of Clare and Henry who met when Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry suffers from a rare condition where his genetic clock periodically resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future.
