The ever-wonderful Patti Smith dropped into our Carlton shop for a surprise visit last Wednesday, and made the day of some very lucky fans – our staff and customers alike! She signed copies of her two memoirs, Just Kids and M Train, and both are sitting at the top of our bestsellers list for the week.

Last week also saw Heather Rose named the winner of the 2017 Stella Prize for her clever, moving novel, The Museum of Modern Love. Chair of the Stella Prize judging panel, Brenda Walker, said: ‘It is rare to encounter a novel with such powerful characterisation, such a deep understanding of the consequences of personal and national history, such affection for a city and the people who are drawn to it, and such dazzling and subtle explorations of the importance of art in everyday life.’

Other bestselling books from last week include an insightful book on parenting teen girls from Madonna King (Being 14), two crime fiction blockbusters (The Thirst, Earthly Remains), Scott Pape’s bestselling money guide (The Barefoot Investor) and a fascinating, provocative argument for a better future (Utopia for Realists).
