Our top 10 bestselling books last week were dominated by new releases, but none could unseat detained journalist Behrouz Boochani’s No Friend But the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison from the top spot. Boochani’s award-winning memoir and document of life on Manus Island detention centre returned to the national conversation after ABC program Australian Story profiled the journalist last week, and after numerous Australian writers added their names to an open letter calling for Boochani to be released from Manus Island and resettled in Australia.

Two highly anticipated new novels placed in our top 10: Melina Marchetta’s heart-warming novel for adults, The Place on Dalhousie, and Andrea Goldsmith’s masterful story about exile, Invented Lives. British author Max Porter’s Lanny (which our booksellers are loving) is also among the fiction bestsellers, alongside works by Trent Dalton and Sally Rooney.

Our bestselling new release non-fiction titles include: Sophie Cunningham’s wide-ranging essay collection, City of Trees: Essays on Life, Death and the Need for a Forest; Loretta Smith’s biography of Alice Anderson, an extraordinary Australian motoring entrepreneur and inventor who established Australia’s first motor service run by women; and the dynamic and diverse new collection, Growing Up African in Australia.
