Our children’s and YA bestsellers list includes so many terrific brand-new September releases!

In picture books there’s a brand-new adventure with big, bold and magnificent Mr Chicken from Australian Children’s Laureate Leigh Hobbs, and author–illustrator team Andrea Beaty and David Roberts introduce us to yet another utterly original, completely charming character in Ada Twist, Scientist.

Junior and middle fiction readers are snapping up copies of the new WeirDo story from Anh Do and Jules Faber, Mega Weird, as well as the first books of two new series for this readership: Uncensored by Michael Wagner and Wayne Bryant, and Dog Man by Dav Pilkey.

Finally, we are BIG fans of the two newly-released young adult books that have made it on our bestsellers list this week.

Cath Crowley’s Words in Deep Blue is a lyrical ode to love, friendship and bookshops, and has been the recipient of much superlative praise from our booksellers: ‘my Young Adult book of the year’; ‘I straight-up LOVED this book’, etc. You can read our rave review here.

Peadar Ó Guilín’s YA horror read The Call has also been the recipient of much praise, admittedly of a very different tenor: ‘This novel gave me actual nightmares’ ‘The Hunger Games with sadistic Irish fairies’, etc. You can read a collection of staff raves here.

Please note, this list does not include books bought at the Melbourne Writers Festival Festival Bookshop over the weekend. Those sales will be included in next week’s list of bestsellers.
