It’s another week at number one for Young Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe. The Dark Emu author has penned a young readers’ edition of his bestselling book for adults; a timely and authentic examination of the history of this country. It’s fascinating and a perfect jumping board for families to talk about Australia’s historical treatment of our Indigenous peoples.

It’s also wonderful to see the new Polly and Buster, The Search for the Silver Witch: Polly and Buster (Book 3), doing well. Sally Rippin’s heartwarming series follows Polly, a witch, and Buster, a monster, as they navigate friendship in a world that wants to keep them apart. It’s a great way of exploring difference for younger readers.

Another book that celebrates unlikely friendships includes Nova Weetman’s beautiful middle-grade novel Sick Bay, where two very different Grade 6 girls meet in their school’s sick bay and become close. It’s beautifully written, emotional novel and has been resonating with young readers and old alike.
