Two picture books by Senior Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy and illustrator Lisa Kennedy have topped our children’s and YA bestsellers of last week. Wilam: A Birrarung Story (with Yarra River-Keeper Andrew Kelly) introduces children to the role Birrarung (the Yarra river) plays in the lives of the flora, fauna and people who make their homes along it, all while seamlessly integrating the Woiwurrung language into the English text. Murphy and Kennedy’s first book Welcome to Country, is a celebration of Indigenous land and culture that takes us through a beautiful Wominjeka (welcome) ceremony which gives visitors permission to enter traditional lands.

Also among our top 10 is the National Gallery of Victoria’s picture book tie-in to its recent Escher x Nendo exhibition, Make Believe: M.C. Escher for Kids, which introduces readers aged five years and up to the optical illusions and eye tricks of M. C. Escher.

Other children’s and YA bestsellers this week include All the Ways to be Smart , the latest Weirdo book by Anh Do, Hopping Weird, and young adult novels by Ambelin and Ezekiel Kwaymullina (Catching Teller Crow) and Matthew Reilly (The Secret Runners of New York).
