Author Ella Holcombe and illustrator David Cox’s delicate, moving picture book about a family’s experience of a bushfire, The House on the Mountain, is our bestselling title from last week. This timely children’s book, which was launched at the Readings Kids store last week, draws from the personal experience of author Holcombe, who grew up in Kingslake Victoria, and lost her parents in the Black Saturday bushfires 10 years ago.

Two life-affirming picture books are also in the top 10: classic-in-making All the Ways to be Smart by Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys and Oliver Jeffers’ perennial Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth. Both are the perfect way to introduce children to the wondrous diversity of this world. Rambunctious funny stories are standing out in junior and middle fiction, with titles by Dav Pilkey, Andrew McDonald and Ben Woods, and David Walliams.

Readers are devouring several YA books, with Karen McManus’ psychological thriller Two Can Keep a Secret rounding out the top three, and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas shooting back into the top 10 following the release of the film adaptation in local cinemas. Leigh Bardugo’s new fantasy epic King of Scars is also in the top 10, alongside Ambelin and Ezekiel Kwaymullina’s Catching Teller Crow, which won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Writing for Young Adults last week.
