Two books from one of our favourite local authors appear on our list of bestselling children’s and YA books from last week.

Zana Fraillon’s first YA novel, The Bone Sparrow, has been shortlisted for our inaugural Readings Young Adult Book Prize (alongside five other fantastic reads), and we were so pleased to launch her second YA novel, The Ones That Disappeared, at Readings Kids last week. Both these novels tackle difficult but deeply important topics in ways that are accessible and relatable for young readers.

Also for YA readers, Angie Thomas’s debut The Hate U Give is one of the most talked-about books of the year. You can read why our staff love this book here.

Looking to younger readers, last week’s bestsellers list also includes the fiftieth book in the wonderful That’s not my… board book series for toddlers (That’s Not My Unicorn); a hilarious offering for ages 8 and up from David Walliams and Tony Ross (The World’s Worst Children 2), and the ever-popular illustrated story anthology from Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo (Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls).

Last week was NAIDOC Week 2017, and so we’re delighted to see Bronwyn Houston’s gorgeous counting book, Counting Aussie Animals in My Backyard, feature on our list. Houston’s illustrations are vivid and engaging as she transports readers into her vibrant backyard. You can also find more recommended reads that explore Indigenous culture and voices for young people here.
