How to donate to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

In 2015, The Readings Foundation is sponsoring the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC). Here, we share some information about how their donations work.

More than half of the clients using services provided by ASRC have no income at all, and nearly 90% live below the poverty line. The centre’s Food and Aid Network responds to this destitution through the in-house provision of essential items. Asylum seeker members can also visit the Foodbank which operates on a ‘supermarket model’ and allows members to make their own selections within set limits, rather than being allocated a food parcel.

The best way to stay up-to-date with what the ASRC needs is by following their Facebook feed. You can find it here.

These are some items that ASRC are looking for particularly this month…

  • Blankets (in good condition)
  • Gift cards (for places such as Kmart, Big W and Target)
  • Disposable nappies
  • Canned legumes without sauce (such as chickpeas, lentils or kidney beans)
  • Canned diced tomatoes
  • Spreads (such as honey, jam, tahini or peanut butter)
  • Sweet or savoury biscuits and crackers
  • UHT full-cream milk
  • Canned sardines and salmon

Also, here is a helpful list of items they can’t accept…
