Four Australian books are becoming TV shows & films

Here are four upcoming Australian book-to-TV-&-film adaptations that have our staff excited! (Three are supported by Screen Australia and one is an overseas production…)


Joe Cinque’s Consolation: A True Story of Death, Grief and the Law by Helen Garner

A film adaptation of Helen Garner’s classic true crime story has received funding from Screen Australia. Garner – who has read an early draft of the screenplay written by Matt Rubinstein and Sotiris Dounoukos – said: ‘(Dounoukos’) whole attitude to the story is a sophisticated one and full of human sympathy…‘

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey

This beloved novel, which was named the Indie Book of the Year in 2009, also received funding from Screen Australia to be turned into a film, with Shaun Grant billed as the writer and Rachel Perkins as the director. The movie will be filmed in Silvey’s home state of Western Australia, which hosted a stage adaptation of the book earlier this year. Buzzfeed is already starting a rumour that Kylie Minogue may be involved…

The Family Law by Benjamin Law

The television adaption of Benjamin Law’s hilarious and much-loved memoir has been in the works for some time and now, again with funding from Screen Australia, it’s starting to feel real. The script is written by Law together with Marieke Hardy.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman have teamed up to star in a David E. Kelley miniseries based on this fantastic release from Liane Moriarty. While we wish it could’ve been an Australian production (and have for our own enjoyment sorted out all the casting with Australian actors), we’re thrilled to see Liane Moriarty’s sixth novel receiving the love it deserves.
