Desi Boardman is a finalist for Bookseller of the Year 2019

We’re delighted that our brilliant Manager of Readings Hawthorn, Desi Boardman, has been shortlisted for this year’s ABA Text Publishing Bookseller of the Year. These awards recognise booksellers for their performance within their own bookshops, along with their achievements within the book industry and throughout their local community. We are very proud of Desi, and always thrilled to see our booksellers recognised for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication.

Desi says, ‘It’s such an honour to be nominated for this award, although it seems a bit strange getting recognised for something that I love doing, and have loved doing for the last 33 years of my career.

'There is no better feeling than recommending a book I love to a customer, and for them to return for more conversation and suggestions. With the huge and varied event program we have at the Hawthorn store, I’ve been privileged to have met some wonderful authors over the years.

'I also consider myself fortunate having the opportunity to work with a diverse group of colleagues who inspire me each day with their love of literature, music and film and their enthusiasm for working in this wonderful industry of ours.

'Of course, it goes without saying that the most inspirational and enthusiastic of all is Mark Rubbo, who employed me 23 years ago to manage the Hawthorn store, and I can honestly say I’ve loved every minute of it.’

Desi has been shortlisted alongside Suzie Bull (Farrells Bookshop), Sarina Gale (The Sun Bookshop), John Mitchell (The Bookroom Collective) and Linda Tassone (Jeffreys Books).

Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted. The Bookseller of the Year will be announced at this year’s ABA Conference Gala Dinner on Sunday 23 June.
