Books I was inspired to read by attending Readings events

Being the events manager of Readings is one of the most fortunate of roles in our little old Melbourne town. One of the greatest treats of my role – apart from meeting all the wonderful authors and readers – is reading books that I might not normally pick up. This activity can lead to surprising delights.

Here is a sample of my surprise reads that turned into treats this year, thanks to our event program.

Advanced Style: Older and Wiser by Ari Seth Cohen and Simon Doonan

This follow-up to Ari Seth Cohen’s bestselling Advanced Style features more senior street style and inspiration from all over the globe. In Advanced Style: Older and Wiser, Seth Cohen shares his work from the past few years – including some of the world’s best-dressed older gentlemen. The event that we hosted to celebrate this book is in my top 10 favourite gigs of all time, largely because of all the magnificent women who came along.

Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave

Everyone Brave is Forgiven is a heartbreaking read. Set during the London Blitz, this novel follows the lives of three characters that find the consequences of the times life changing. It’s also possible that Chris Cleave is one of the loveliest novelists of all times. He’s witty and interested in everything. It was a pleasure to meet him and share with one another our observations on education and international politics.

Artie and the Grime Wave by Richard Roxburgh

Artie and the Grime Wave is a ridiculous adventure story of two best friends who live in a country town filled with a wonderful array of characters. There is also no way that I would have read this book aimed at younger readers if I didn’t have an event with the very talented (and very handsome) actor, director, writer and illustrator Richard Roxburgh. I’m glad to let you know that his first children’s book is funny, clever and worth a read – whatever age you are.

The Killing Season Uncut by Sarah Ferguson with Patricia Drum

This book goes behind the scenes of Sarah Ferguson’s gripping three-part television series, candidly revealing the stories behind the interviews. If you have seen The Killing Season already then it’s hard to believe that any more horror could be revealed by our politicians, but this book proves you wrong. Here it is: the full disaster. Ferguson truly is an extraordinary journalist

Our Tiny, Useless Hearts by Toni Jordan

Our Tiny, Useless Hearts is reminiscent of Oscar Wilde’s great comedies, but set here in Melbourne. It’s a parody with heart, slap-stick humour with touches of insight, and wit with humility. While I’m not a huge fan of reading comedies, Toni Jordan is exactly the type of open, generous author that makes you want to read everything she ever writes. She’s funny and kind, and this novel demonstrates that same spirit.
