Adam Johnson wins 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

After last year’s stalemate, the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction has been awarded to Adam Johnson for

The committee described the book as “an exquisitely crafted novel that carries the reader on an adventuresome journey into the depths of totalitarian North Korea and into the most intimate spaces of the human heart.”

Nathan Englander’s short-story collection, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank was one of the finalists of this category. In his review of the book, our Books Division Manager Martin Shaw writes, “I think the chief quality to underscore here is nothing else but the author’s courage.”

Also a finalist was Eowyn Ivey’s The Snow Child, an enchanting novel about an elderly couple living in Alaska whose longing for a child is answered by a feral girl. Our reviewer, Jo Case, writes, “…the characters are beautifully realised and satisfyingly nuanced, making us care desperately about what happens to them.”
