Hands up those who don’t have Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in your collection? Or if you’re a real music lover, don’t have it already three or four times? I know, this piece worm’s its way into every CD collection it seems one way or the other. The amount of times I’ve heard it performed and performed badly, I hate to say it, but sometimes, I can’t stand the piece! And then I put on the Europa Galante recording. It wouldn’t be too far to say I got tears in my eyes. This is Spring! The sun is out, the rain comes through and it simply blew me away. This recording reminds me of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony in a way this work never has before. If Walt Disney had heard these guys perform the Four Seasons, he might have used this instead in the classic Fantasia. The great thing about this box set though is that it also includes his Dresden Sonatas and a whole slew of favourite concertos. If you’re a fan of Vivaldi, this box set (and its companion ones) really should bring a big Four Seasons smile to your face.
