Verdi, I Vespri Siciliani

I always forget how many operas Verdi wrote, until I come across a little gem like this one. Written in the French tradition of Grand Opera, it’s original French libretto was replaced with an Italian soon after it’s initial premiere. In this dark production, it features Giorgio Zancanaro on stage, Riccardo Muti in the pit and Carla Fracci in the complete third act ballet. Overall, a gem of an opera unlikely to be found elsewhere of this caliber.
