For the first time in six years, post-rock instrumental trio Dirty Three – who have been involved in other projects, notably Warren Ellis as one of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds and Grinderman collaborators – have released a new album. Consistently original and without a single bad track behind them, Warren Ellis’s improvisational violin styling blends perfectly with unfairly talented fellow members, drummer Jim White and guitarist Mick Turner. The 2005 album Cinder was beautiful but mellowed, so the band’s return to the raw, spontaneous energy evident in earlier works is worth celebrating.
