The View From the Edge

This new compilation is a great introduction to some of the more out-there classical repertoire. Not necessarily considered contemporary anymore – some of them were written as far back as 1938 – they are all clearly twentieth-century repertoire. The recording features Chávez’s Toccata for Percussion, a three-movement work with certainly no tune to speak of, but a fascinating insight into rhythm and the timbres of different percussion instruments. Also including a dash of Messiaen with a touch of Varèse and Revueltas, this will be an eye-opener for those just starting to discover some of the twentieth century’s masterpieces.
