Schumann: Piano Works by Wilhelm Kempff

I must be honest here and say I’m not particularly familiar with Schumann’s Piano repertoire, or even much of his other repertoire. So I looked forward to listening to this Romantic composer at his best. What I wasn’t expecting was the sense of style, cheekiness and a downright groovy-ness that got me bopping my head almost against my will. Kempff highlights the slides along the harmonic shifts with great aplomb that gives you shivers. The slower movements are performed with simplicity and a refined sense of colour. A highly enjoyable look not only at a composer who to my shame needs more attention, but also a look at a stunning pianist that I think will serve me well in years to come.
