Tord Gustavsen’s piano trio trilogy of recent years comprises one of the most beautiful – and popular – artistic statements of recent years. Restored, Returned is a graceful step into uncharted territory, adding questing tenor/soprano sax and the mesmerising, ethereal voice of Kristin Asbjørnsen, who interprets the words of W.H. Auden as well as performing wordless incantations on three radically different takes of Leftover Lullaby. interspersed throughout. As ever, Gustavsen is as concerned with silence as sound, here exploring every possible relationship of various duos, trios and quartets drawn from within the quintet format. This may take a couple of listens for some of Tord’s fans – it hooked me instantly.
