Rave On: Buddy Holly

Tribute albums can be strange beasts. They’re often criticised for straying too far from the original work – or on the flipside, for being too generic and not adding anything new. The influence of the legendary Buddy Holly is not in dispute here, a fact proven by the interesting reworking of a good chunk of his catalogue by a truly eclectic range of artists – The Detroit Cobras, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Nick Lowe, Justin Townes Earle, Florence and the Machine and Julian Casablancas, to name a few. If it helps in any small way to introduce Buddy to a whole new generation, that has to be applauded.
