I’ve been mighty fortunate with my reviews – and as a music fan in general – this month. Hot on the heels of the new Wilco record is the return of a band to whom the aforementioned owe more than a passing debt. The fabulous Jayhawks are back in their original line-up for the first time since 1995’s sublime Tomorrow the Green Grass. It’s difficult to describe how influential and revered this band – the original alt. country pioneers – are among musicians and fans alike. All of the trademark elements they so effortlessly crafted on previous records are in place on Mockingbird Time: the elegant folk-rock, the soaring sunshine harmonies and near-perfect songwriting chops. Long-time fans rejoice – and newcomers to this wonderful band, be sure to check out those recently reissued mid-90s classics.
