Houdini’s Flight: Angelo Loukakis

Terry Voulos is a man in crisis. He’s sick of driving buses, of seeing the increasing contempt of his wife and wonders whether his own son even notices him or not. When the highlight of his week is performing some very basic magic tricks to a bunch of disinterested pensioners, he grasps this as the only chance to escape his gloomy reality. Hal Sargeson, an ill-kempt, scrawny gent who lives in an abandoned hall in Chinatown, sees Terry’s performance and offers to teach him the skills that he learned decades earlier from his father, assistant disciple to the world famous Harry Houdini.

Terry’s life unravels further as he’s unfairly blamed for a tragic death, is rejected by his own father and wonders just why this strange old man wants to share the mysteries of escapology, disappearance and transformation with him. Crossing the boundaries of cultural differences, historical fact, unhappy childhoods and repressed memories, Terry discovers the truth behind secrets never shared and finds strength and meaning in the most unlikely of places. Is magic just an illusion or a lesson to be learned?
