Gorecki: Symphony No. 3: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs: Donald Runnicles

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs this mournful work with a delicacy required by such a tightly scored work. Dedicated to mothers, Christine Brewer is the featured soprano who effortlessly sits atop the orchestral mass with a golden sound. The beautiful second movement is skilfully balanced with the quiet piano chords to weep gently under the sustained string sound. Donald Runnicles allows the violins time over each step from note to note, to stretch out the tension in all of the chordal progressions. A warm sound from each section of the orchestra allows this work to lament quietly yet powerfully for the entire recording.
