BachCage, Francesco Tristano

I’ve tried to think of a more cogent connectionbetween J.S. Bach and John Cage thanthat provided in the enigmatic liner notesto this disc by Bruce Brubaker, and I’m notsure I can. Certainly both were innovators, and the program here carries that spirit ofinnovation further, with recordings treatedelaborately in post-production by producerMoritz von Oswald. Tristano’s Bach isenjoyably strict, and the recordings seem tosupport his approach by enhancing the percussivequalities of the piano sound. Tristanoselects some less familiar Cage works – allworks for un-prepared piano that are, nevertheless, treated to a variety of subtle reverband delay effects. In the piano version ofCage’s The Seasons, this is particularly effective– the work’s atmospheric qualities subtlybrought to the fore.
