April Underhill, Tooth Fairy: Bob Graham

In one sense, this lovely picture book is a classic tooth fairy story; it tells how the fairies come to young Daniel’s bedside to swap his tooth for a coin, and are nearly discovered. But it’s much more than that: it’s a celebration of loving families, of growing up and being trusted to take risks. It’s fairy April and her sister Esme’s first delivery, and their parents are worried they’re not up to it. They have to fly over the M24 with all its rumbling trucks for one thing – and do they really understand that they are ‘spirits of the air’ and must never be seen?

Such adventure, such heart-stopping tension, and such parental pride when the mission is accomplished. A book to share again and again, poring over the pictures. (The fairies’ bathroom is my favourite!)
