All I Intended To Be: Emmylou Harris

An instantly recognisable voice that glides through this collection of songs like a warm knife through butter, Emmylou is one of the greatest interpreters of songs by other writers and artists ever, and on this album she does not let any of them down. She even lends her voice to some of her own songs. The pace never gets past a shuffle and while many songs are rich in texture and layered with harmonies and duets by famous friends, the highlights to me are still Emmylou and guitar, singing about characters who are worn and world-weary, real people in real settings. Highlights include Tracy Chapman’s ‘All That You Have Is Your Soul’ and Patty Griffins’ beautifully penned ‘Moon Song’.
