A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Marguerite Caine’s parents are physicists who have just finished creating a small device that allows travel into different dimensions: the firebird. They have discovered that other dimensions exist and events are happening in those dimensions at the same time as events are taking place in the dimension we are in now. However, in other dimensions things might have happened differently – even though you might exist in another dimension, your circumstances and personality could be different.

The discovery and creation of the firebird is cause for celebration, but celebrations are cut short when Marguerite’s father is killed in a car crash. Someone had tampered with the brakes and that someone is very close to the Caine family. Paul Markov is an intern who worked for Marguerite’s parents for years and is very dedicated to the Caines’ work. His murder of Marguerite’s father is an unexpected and horrible betrayal.

To make matters worse, Paul has taken the firebird and nicked off into another dimension. Marguerite decides to follow him. With the help of another intern, she jumps dimensions to find and kill Paul Markov.

I’m not much of a sci-fi fan, so I was surprised when I found myself quite addicted to this story. Marguerite is a go-getting young woman and this is a fun, intriguing read. For ages 12 and up.
