Wow in the World by Mindy Thomas & Guy Raz

The human body is an endlessly interesting subject and this book by two celebrated podcasters is endlessly entertaining. Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz are the hosts of the NPR family podcast Wow in the World, where they share news and facts about science and technology. The pair’s funny, fact-filled book about the human body features cartoon-style illustrations, sassy headings, memorable puns and yes, many gross bits that will win over plenty of fans. It’s genuinely a very funny and eye-opening read.

One particular highlight for young readers is how this book endorses reading out of order and encourages kids to dip into the parts that grab their attention. Some of the things that grabbed my attention were: a speech bubble debate titled, ‘Is it ok to eat my boogers?’; a wanted ad for skin that reads, ‘Must be available 24/7 no time off for weekends and holidays’; trading card profiles for Scrape, Scar, Bruise and Scab alongside a ‘should I pick it?’ flow chart; a puberty board game where a growth spurt moves you four inches ahead; and, of course, a list of butt nicknames.

Need I say more? Wow in the World is very fun nonfiction for ages 8+.
