Under the Canopy: Trees Around the World by Iris Volant

Flying Eye Books produces some of the most beautifully designed and illustrated, and informative children’s publications I’ve ever seen.

Under the Canopy is no exception, but it’s an unusual mix. It’s not only an educational introduction to the many different types of trees and how they’re used for food and shelter, but also to the wonderful myths and legends that have sprung up around them.

There are many magical tales of trees told in this book, including the celebrated cherry tree and its significance to the Japanese people, the enchanted hawthorn and its impact on European folklore and the great yew – the inspiration for the world tree of Norse mythology.

Under the Canopy is a gorgeous picture book and each beautifully designed double-page spread has lovely illustrations and text thoughtfully composed to inspire young minds. Through these many stories we find that trees have become symbols of knowledge and wisdom, the spirit of freedom, hope and resilience.

Highly recommended for children ages 5+ and definitely one to share with the whole family.
