Special Kev has red hair and freckles, just like a strawberry according to his Aunty Pav. Meet a whole menagerie of characters: some kind, some mean, including eleventy-million cousins (of which Fatty Boombah is his favourite) and Nicky Bathgate, who doesn’t play footy and is at the centre of an event which sees our Kev in a spot of time out.

Kevin has a special Mum who plants red roses upon his birth and names a star Special Kevin in his honour. I love the whimsy of Chris McKimmie’s books, his busy illustrations and his spontaneity. I highly recommend a trip to planet McKimmie: three stars left of the moon, a planet where they speak childish. You will return with a smile on your face and feel a bit special too.
