Purcell: Dido and Aeneas: Simone Kermes, Deborah York, Teodor Currentzis

I love this label. It reminds me of Jordi Savall’s beautiful label Alia Vox and features the wonderful Christina Pluhar, who knows how to take an old classical standard and shake it up to give it her fresh, inspiring, 21st century touch. So do Teodor Currentzis and the players of MusicAeterna, the New Siberian Singers and the soloists in this new recording of Purcell’s masterpiece.

The emphasis on the theatrical meaning is paramount in this original instrument interpretation. So often, performances of this work can be stodgy and staid. Here it is fresh, light and heartbreakingly poignant all the way through. Simone Kermes sings the role of the abandoned Dido with sensual delicacy. There isn’t a disengaged moment from any of the players throughout this hour of sublime music-making. Bravo Alpha. Keep em coming, please.
