Overnighter

Murray, already a legend for his pioneering brand of outback rock with the Warumpi Band and a series of extremely good solo albums, has hit an all-time artistic high with this collection of songs. Thematically, the album consists of a collection of road-train drivers, drifters and itinerant workers and of course, Murray himself telling their tales from behind the wheel on their way somewhere. Murray who has travelled this country from end to end several times still pulls all-nighters on the way to various gigs and has had plenty of time to muse and write songs about these characters and his deep love of the land.

There’s lots of great country rock and fine electric guitar work from Neil as well as some beautiful slower acoustic numbers. It’s hard to isolate standouts here but the ringing electric guitar of ‘Driftin Ways’ and a haunting song written after one of a series of healing walks undertaken with indigenous people in Western Victoria back in 2005 is an absolute beauty. Easily one of the year’s best releases.
