Locked Out Lily by Nick Lake & Emily Gravett (illus.)

Lily has a lot to contend with. Not only does she feel powerless in her battle with a chronic illness, she fears losing her parents to a new addition to her family. As her Mum and Dad dote over their new baby in hospital, a pair of malevolent doppelgangers invade the family home, determined to do harm. Indignation, stubbornness and mounting anger fuel Lily’s determination to rid her home of these sinister imposters. Luckily, she has new-found allies – a motley crew of talking animals pledge allegiance to her mission, banding together to save the day.

This deliciously scary tale is an atmospheric creation with unforgettable characters. Courageous Lily and her lovable animal heroes strive against menacing, unearthly forces and insurmountable odds right up to the enigmatic yet satisfying ending. The writing is clever, with genuinely funny moments bringing relief to scenes of dark intensity, a contrast Emily Gravett’s moody black-and-white illustrations capture perfectly.

Steeped in mystery and foreboding, Locked Out Lily is a wonderful read-aloud with much to interpret. It’s ideal for families and the classroom; highly recommended for confident readers aged 9 and up; lovers of Coraline are in for a treat!
