Harper Simon: Harper Simon

Being the son of one Paul Simon surely carries a weight of expectation under which many would crumble. That Harper Simon’s debut album is so assured and beautifully crafted is a testament to a talent that shows no sign of wilting under a rather large shadow.

Harper has certainly inherited his father’s gift for melody and lyric – and while the similarity to the old man is at times uncanny, it would be unfair to label this record as derivative. From the gospel tones of ‘All’ to ‘God’ to lovely closer ‘Berkeley Girl’, this is a fantastic collection of tunes made all the better by a team of crack Nashville session musicians (check out the pedal steel work) as a backing band.
